WELCOME TO 631 VGS

631 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS) is one of 27 Air Cadet Gliding Squadrons which are under the command of Headquarters Air Cadets (HQAC), through the Personnel and Training Command of the Royal Air Force.  We are currently based at RAF Woodvale, although the squadron was based at RAF Sealand until March 2006, when it closed.

Our job is to provide gilding training to affiliated cadets of the Air Training Corps (ATC), and the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). To achieve this objective we also train our own junior staff.

There are two types of aircraft operated by the 27 VGS, the Viking T Mk1 conventional glider and the Vigilant T Mkl motor glider. Each VGS operates only one of these types.  631 VGS have been operating the Viking aircraft for many years, but due to our move to a busy RAF airfield, we have converted and are now flying the Vigilant.

All of our staff are volunteers and the team comprises a mixture of RAFVR(T) Officers, Civilian Gliding Instructors (CGI), and Flight Staff Cadets (FSC). All of our staff are either Qualified Gliding Instructors (QGI) or are under training to achieve this status (UT instructors).

We provide gliding training to a population of 2748 cadet students.  We are proud to be one of the top gliding squadrons in the UK, and in 2005 we won both the best conventional, and best overall VGS trophies, the 2 highest trophies in air cadet gliding.
